LAWRENCE “LARRY” S. SPORS
Lawrence “Larry” S. Spors, Janesville, 90, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2023, at his home, surrounded by family. Larry was born on the home farm in Melrose, WI, June 2, 1932, to Otto and Ella (Shettler) Spors. He was the 10th of 11 children. He grew up on the dairy farm as the youngest boy and developed a farmer’s work ethic. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1950. He joined the United States Army in 1951 and served three years with stations in Greenland, Newfoundland and Panama.
Larry married the love of his life, Virginia Mae Stone, May 26, 1951. Together they raised four children, Michael (Patricia) Spors, Debra (Jeff) North, Denise (Ken) Dill and Christopher (Samantha) Spors. Larry and Ginny Mae were married nearly 61 years, and she preceded him in death April 19, 2012. Family meant everything to him, and he always gave us all he had.
Larry worked for Janesville Auto Transport (JATCO) from 1959 until his retirement in 1994; first in Black River Falls, then transferring to Janesville in 1963. He loved to hunt and fish. His favorite was deer hunting, until turkeys became re-established. He harvested his first gobbler in 1986 and many thereafter. He also enjoyed rooting for his favorite sports teams: the Packers, Badgers and Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
Larry is survived by his four children and their spouses. He is additionally survived by nine grandchildren: Jared (Jessica) Spors, Melissa (David) Hubbard, Adam (Lindsay) North, Ryan North (Yvonne Holtslander), Bradley (Heather) North, Alicia (John) Larsen, Benjamin (Meredith) Dill, Jennifer Whittaker and Abbey (Stephen) Mitchell; and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and his sister-in-law, Doris DeColon.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his 10 siblings.
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Asbury United Methodist Church, with Pastor Will Jewson officiating. A visitation was held from 3 p.m. until the time of service. Military Honors provided by the VFW Post 1621 immediately followed the service, followed by a luncheon in the church fellowship hall. A private urn committal service will be held at Milton Lawns Memorial Park at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or ECHO of Janesville.
