David “Woody” Meyer

David “Woody” Meyer

David “Woody” Meyer, 73, became our heavenly angel Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025, after a short stay at Emplify by Gundersen in La Crosse with his wife, Luane, and children, Jarod and Jennifer, by his side.

Born on May 22, 1952, to Philip and Aldena Meyer, Woody spent his entire childhood in Black River Falls where he formed lifelong friendships and made countless memories. After graduating from Black River Falls High School (BRFHS) in 1970, he went on to attend UW-Stout, where he graduated with a degree in technology education. He returned to his roots and taught technology education for 33 years at BRFHS.

Woody extended his love of sports through coaching: cross country (30 years), track and field (33 years) and boys basketball (16 years). He had the joy of going to state with cross country in 1989 and 2000, and boys basketball in 1988. In 2024, Woody was inducted into the Tiger Athletics Hall of Fame. He was also known as the local BRF sports historian and voice of the Coulee Conference. When he wasn’t coaching, he was cheering on his beloved Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers and could be heard on-air with WWIS or working for Tiger athletics. Woody religiously attended the boys state basketball tournament in Madison.

From a young age, Woody dedicated his life to his community, starting with working at Hagen’s Menswear followed by Black River State Forest. When he returned from college, he devoted his time teaching for the School District of BRF until his retirement in May 2007. Upon retirement, you would see Woody at 5 a.m. downtown water feeding the Karner Blue Garden Club baskets or gardening in the Spaulding Community Garden. He kept a full pocket calendar as a member of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and BRF Educational Enrichment Fund Board of Directors, and other countless community engagements.

Did you ever receive the infamous “white envelope” from Woody Meyer? He shared his love of photography in many ways, including snapping candid shots at local events.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 49 years, Luane Meyer; son Jarod (Megan) Meyer and their children Trey and Drew; daughter, Jennifer (Sam) Merriman and their children Connor and Natalynn; sisters Mary Goens and Marlene Meyer; and brother-in-law Clyde Smith. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Aldena Meyer; father and mother-in-law Orvis and Delores Hornby; niece Betsy Bower; and sister Katherine Smith.

A time of visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.  Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025, with an additional visitation at 10 a.m. until the time of service. Visitations and memorial service will take place at Black River Falls High School – Sam Young Gym, 1200 Pierce Street, Black River Falls. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Woody’s memory. Family and friends are encouraged to wear Badger, Brewers, Packers or BRF Tiger apparel.
