DELORES J. BOWEN

DELORES J. BOWEN

Delores J. Bowen, 87, of Sparta, passed away peacefully Feb. 26, 2025, with her family by her side. Born March 21, 1937, in Melrose, WI, to Wenzel and Gertrude (Stetzer) Ott, she grew up in a loving home with her two brothers, Dale and Dennis.

After graduating from Melrose High School, Delores met Robert Bowen, and they married May 24, 1958. Together, they raised three wonderful children, Denise (Bowen) Gray, Joel Bowen and Todd Bowen. Though they later separated, Delores remained a devoted and loving mother, always putting her family first.

She spent over 30 years working as a budget analyst at Fort McCoy, where her strong work ethic and dedication were admired by colleagues. She retired Sept. 30, 1999, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and integrity.

Delores’ heart truly belonged to her community. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sparta, where her faith guided her in serving others. She also devoted countless hours to the American Legion Auxiliary, holding various leadership roles and organizing funeral luncheons to support grieving families.

One of her greatest joys was Sparta Butterfest. As a founding member, she played a vital role in shaping the festival, serving on the board of directors and acting as the longtime secretary. She lived for Butterfest weekend, camping out near headquarters to soak up every moment, and her energy and enthusiasm were infectious.

Beyond Butterfest, Delores gave her time and talents to many other organizations. She was a dedicated member of the Angelo PTA, the Eagles Auxiliary and served as Monroe County’s snowmobile coordinator for more than 35 years. She was also an integral part of the Sparta Trailblazers, where she held positions as both president and secretary.

Delores had a knack for making life enjoyable. She loved to cook, can and garden—always eager to share her homemade goods with those she loved. She had a sharp eye for a bargain and could never resist the thrill of a good thrift store find. Fishing trips, bowling and visits to the casino added a little extra excitement to her days.

More than anything, Delores cherished her family. As a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, she showered her loved ones with warmth, wisdom and unconditional love. Her kindness, strength and generous spirit will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those whose lives she touched.

Delores is survived by her sons, Joel Bowen and Todd Bowen (Kim Bowen); her grandchildren, Stephanie (Gray) Spohn (Matt Spohn), Lee Shipley (Kristin Shipley), Olivia (Bowen) Sanders (Scott Sanders II), and Erika (Bowen) Petrie (Jordan Petrie); and her great-grandchildren, Alexander and Danielle Shipley, Oliver Sanders and Eleanor Spohn. She is also survived by her brother, Dennis Ott (Carol Ott); and her nieces and nephews, Tina, Daniel, Bruce, Terry and Jayme.

Delores was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Denise (Bowen) Gray; Robert Bowen; her parents, Wenzel Ott and Gertrude (Stetzer) Ott; and her brother, Dale Ott.

A Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Pastor Josh Buzbee officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.

A Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family kindly requests that donations in Delores’ honor can be made to Sparta Festivals, Sparta Trailblazers Snowmobile Club or Trinity Lutheran Church
