HELEN JOHNSON

Helen Ann Else Johnson, 90, of Hixton, WI, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, at Black River Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 23, 1936, to Don and Leona (Spangler) Afkind. She spent time in Neillsville on the family farm and went on to graduate from Neillsville High School in 1956. After high school, Helen worked at Rodesson’s, now Weyerhauser and also at a dry cleaner’s.

In 1962, she met Vernon Johnson. They wed in 1963 in Edmund, WI, and farmed near Dodgeville and later moved back to the local area. They also raised four children. 

After farming, Helen worked at the local casino doing various jobs including cooking and housekeeping. She later retired from the casino. She enjoyed spending time with her animals, including dogs, cats, and mini horses. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2026 at Trempealeau Valley Lutheran Church (W16933 W Blair Rd, Taylor, WI 54659) with Pastor Elden Simonson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home in Hixton, WI, and at the church for one hour prior to the service Friday. Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton is assisting the family with arrangements.
