JANICE (ROGNESS) STUBRUD

Janice (Rogness) Stubrud passed away April 6, 2025, at the Pine View Care Center Memory Care of Black River Falls and formerly of Alma Center.

She was born Oct. 15, 1950, to Vernon Rogness and Wilva (Smith) Marshall was the second oldest of five children. She had a nurturing soul for her family that followed her throughout her life, often making more than necessary for meals for those that may just show up. Janice graduated from Black River Falls in 1968. On Aug. 2, 1969, she married Claron (Gene) Stubrud at Squaw Creek Lutheran Church in rural Black River Falls. On April 1, 1971, they purchased a farm in the township of Garden Valley in Jackson County. There was where she learned what it took to be a dairy farmer’s wife. Having no experience with crops or cows, Gene patiently taught her the ins and outs of both. Jan and Gene worked alongside each other and built a beautiful farm and raised three children, Wade, Ryan and Megan. They taught their children (and many of their children’s friends) to appreciate the value of a job well done and hard work through their examples. They also were known to have the house where all friends and family were always welcomed.

Jan was first and foremost a farmer’s wife, providing meals for the help or milking alongside her husband or children. She enjoyed the farm, especially milking cows. When her children grew, she took on a part-time job at the Hixton Hardware Store, where she would be the helpful plumber, daily chat or competitor at the daily dice shake at Hixton Café. She truly enjoyed helping others and that continued throughout her life. Jan treasured her volunteering at the Lincoln Elementary school, where she would listen to children read, help them with tasks and would often be ready for a hug. Jan also volunteered with the Jackson County Interfaith Caregivers, often giving rides to those that needed them throughout the community.

Jan and Gene loved to travel, even if it was just for a weekend away or annual trips to Mexico. They loved the company of their friends and were blessed with many.

Nothing brought Janice more joy than her six grandchildren, and she would have “projects” for them to do when they were younger. Simple they were, but treasured opportunities to be with her grandchildren.

Alzheimer’s disease took many years away from being the grandma she wanted to be for all six of her grandchildren, but her smile, willingness to do anything for her grandchildren is what they will treasure.

Janice was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Alma Center, servings as chair of multiple committees, serving as Ladies Aid Chair for all events hosted at the church and the fall bazaars and donut-making as well as superintendent of Sunday school and church board. She was also a 4-H club leader for the Tried N’ True Club for many years.

Janice is survived by her three children and six grandchildren, Wade and his daughters, Alise and Irelyn Stubrud of Merrillan; Ryan and his daughters, Madison and Miryah Stubrud of Alma Center; daughter-in-law-Jill Stubrud also of Alma Center and daughter Megan (Matt) Stuessel and their sons, Jacob and Levi Stuessel, of Alma Center. She is further survived by her mother, Wilva Marshall of Black River Falls; sisters Jo (John) Chrest of Black River Falls, Carla (Rick) Nemitz of Lakeland, FL, Sheryl (Dan) Millis of Black River Falls; brother Ron (Summer) Rogness of Wausau; brother-in-law Red Wagner, Alma Center; and lifelong classmate, travel buddy and friend Susie (Jim) Hanson of Black River Falls. Jan is also survived by many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Janice is proceeded in death by her husband, Claron (Gene) Stubrud; sister Roseanne Wagner; father Vernon (Ham) Rogness and stepmother LaVon Rogness; and stepfather George Marshall. She is also proceeded in death by her mother- and father-in-law, half-siblings, brothers-in-law and nephew as well as dear friends and classmates.

Funeral services will be held April 19, 2025, at Garden Valley Gatherings in Alma Center. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Burial will be at Sechlerville Cemetery immediately following the service. Jensen-Modjeski funeral home is assisting the family with arrangements.

The family would like to thank the exceptional care Jan received at the Pine View Nursing Home and the memory care wing and Moment’s Hospice. May God continue to bless those that work with people who have Alzheimer’s disease.
