MARLENE F. KUNES

Marlene Floy Kunes, 86, of Melrose passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in the Grand View Care Center in Blair.

Marlene was born June 26, 1936, in North Bend to Floyd and Helen (Sims) Emerson. She attended the Melrose High School and then went on to become a registered nurse from the St. Francis School of Nursing.

In her younger years, Marlene enjoyed the dance hall in Cataract where she was courted by Robert Kunes. They married Oct. 28, 1957, in Melrose. Together, they raised three children, Michael Kunes, Elizabeth (John) McRae and Timothy (Shelly) Kunes. Marlene and Bob were blessed with six grandchildren, Alex (Nicole) McRae, Madeline (Ryan) Vinzant, Nicholas (Nicole) Kunes, Miranda (Craig) Chandler, Melinda Kunes and Joshua Kunes, along with nine great-grandchildren. Marlene is also survived by her sister, Diane (Russ) Sacia of Mt. Horeb and many special nieces and nephews, one nephew even naming a homebrewed beer after her, “The Aunt Marlene.”

While Marlene and Bob were raising a family on a dairy farm, Marlene continued her nursing career in the Sparta Hospital, the Black River Falls Heritage Nursing Home (director of nurses) and the Lakeview Care Center in West Salem.

Over the years, Marlene especially enjoyed her time with the Melrose Village View Homemakers, Melrose Lutheran Ladies Aide group, very close friends, traveling across the United States and camping with her husband, Bob, and keeping up with grandkids. She was very happy to be a lifelong resident on “Kunes Road.”

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bob, Feb. 19, 2013 and a sister, Betty Fillner.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 22, 2022, at 11 a.m. in Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, with burial in the Melrose Cemetery, both in Melrose. Pastor Chad Seybt will officiate. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

A special thank you to the Grand View care team in Blair along with St. Croix Hospice. Your genuine care, kindness and compassion toward our mom will never be forgotten.

The Jack Funeral Home in Blair is assisting the family with arrangements.
